The DCPS technical staff recommends either the Linksys or NetGear brands of wireless routers.

First, unplug the power from your cable modem. (pictured here on the left)

Here is a picture of a Linksys wireless router. Do not plug it into power at this time.
The blue wire pictured above will have been connected to your desktop computer. Unplug the computer wire from your desktop computer and plug it into your wireless router in the port that says LAN or something similar.  The blue wire is in the correct slot.
You will need another ethernet cable and it might have come with your wireless router. Using the extra cable, plug it into any of the open ports on the router and into the ethernet port in your desktop computer.  As you can see, this router has more ports for your other wired computers.  The antennae are what will communicate with your laptop's internal wireless card.
Plug your cable modem into power.  Wait about 30 seconds and plug your wireless router into power.

Start your laptop computer.  If you get the Novell login screen, check the box that says "workstation only" or if it is waiting for a password for WINDOWS, type in your Windows login name and password.

YOU MUST DO THIS WHEN YOU ARE HOME!

Cordless phone note!!!! If you have a 2.4 ghz phone (look on bottom of base station) it will conflict with the wireless reception.  Unplug the phone's base station when you use the wireless router.
When your Windows desktop appears, look in the upper left hand corner of your laptop and  hit the BLUE "Thinkvantage" button.  Click "Configure". Productivity Center

Click "Find Wireless Network"
You will see a list that should have your wireless router name.  There will be a radio button (circle) beside it.  Select your wireless router and click Connect. Wait.
You will see a status bar telling you that your machine is connecting.
You should see a message that says you were successful connecting.

You will then get a message that asks if you want to save this setup.  Say "Yes" to save it.

You may name it whatever you choose.
